El presente trabajo se propone establecer la actualidad de una ética de las virtudes de estilo aristotélico en el ámbito de la ética clínica. La relación establecida por Maclntyre entre las prácticas y los “patrones de excelencia” que rigen internamente su ejercicio, juntamente con el enfoque de Pellegrino y Thomasma de la medicina como “comunidad moral” en la que las habilidades técnico-científicas y la disposición moral del agente configuran una unidad indisoluble en el acto médico, son la base del análisis (...) sobre la especificidad de la práctica médica y los consecuentes requerimientos morales de quienes la ejercen. La crisis de la medicina occidental que en los últimos treinta años provocó importantes puntos de fractura con la tradición hipocrática, ofrece una posibilidad de salida reinterpretando sus propios fines. De ello se sigue la necesidad de retomar líneas de la tradición que el ideal de la medicina científica, las reglas del mercado y la burocratización de la atención sanitaria parecieran haber obturado. En esta encrucijada es donde el énfasis puesto por la ética de las virtudes en el ethos profesional, anclado en el compromiso con las personas concretas cuyo beneficio da sentido a la actividad y a las instituciones médicas, resulta imprescindible para balancear las falencias de una ética fundada en principios, sin que ello implique renunciar a los efectivos logros del universalismo moral.This work is meant to set up the present importance of the ethic of virtues, which follows the Aristotelian style in the field of clinical ethics. The relationship established by Maclntyre between the practices and the “patterns of excellence” which internally guides these practices, together with the view of Pellegrino and Thomasma about medicine as a “moral community” in which the technical-scientific skills and the agent’s moral dispositions shape an indissoluble link in the medical act, are the basis for the analysis on the specificity of the medical practice and the moral requirements of the practitioners. The crisis of western medicine that in the last thirty years has given rise to important break points with the hippocratic tradition, offers a possible resolution by the re-interpretation of its proper ends. Therefore, it is a need to return to traditional ways that seem to have lost vigour for the dominance of the ideal of a scientific medicine, for the market rules and bureaucratized health care. In this intersection, the emphasis on a virtue ethic on the professional ethos, grounded on the engagement with the patient whose benefit gives meaning to the activity and medical institutions, is indispensable for the balance of the failures of a principle-based ethic without renouncing to the effective achievement of moral universalism. Can art, religion, or philosophy afford ineffable insights? If so, what are they? The idea of ineffability has puzzled philosophers from Laozi to Wittgenstein. In Ineffability and its Metaphysics: The Unspeakable in Art, Religion and Philosophy, Silvia Jonas examines different ways of thinking about what ineffable insights might involve metaphysically, and shows which of these are in fact incoherent. Jonas discusses the concepts of ineffable properties and objects, ineffable propositions, ineffable content, and ineffable knowledge, examining the metaphysical pitfalls involved (...) in these concepts. Ultimately, she defends the idea that ineffable insights as found in aesthetic, religious, and philosophical contexts are best understood in terms of self-acquaintance, a particular kind of non-propositional knowledge. Ineffability as a philosophical topic is as old as the history of philosophy itself, but contributions to the exploration of ineffability have been sparse. El sujeto del feminismo es aún objeto de un debate importante en el pensamiento contemporáneo. En este artículo discuto con amplitud los argumentos filosóficos de la postura transexcluyente; en concreto, los del feminismo ilustrado español, los cuales han tenido cierto impacto en países de Latinoamérica, como México. Considero que este debate no sólo concierne a las mujeres porque pone en juego las posibilidades de emancipación en un momento de profunda crisis. Además, el tipo de sujeto que presupone esta postura contribuye (...) a una noción de lo humano que, a mi juicio, debe cuestionarse. Físico y real son sinónimos en el sentido de contrapuestos a intencional o conceptivo.2- La realidad como carácter formal de lo aprehendido en impresiónEn este punto se articulan dos temas nucleares de la filosofía zubiriana: realidad e intelección sentiente, que conforman una estructura unitaria. Para Zubiri, la intelección no es acto de una facultad ni de una conciencia, sino que es en sí misma un acto de aprehensión, que como tal pertenece también al sentir. Burnout is characterized by emotional exhaustion and caused by exposure to excessive and prolonged stress related to job conditions. Moreover, burnout is highly prevalent among health care professionals. The aim of this study is, first, to examine the mediating role of social support over the effect of burnout in health care professionals and, second, to explore potential gender differences. A convenience sample of 1,035 health professionals from Ecuador, including 608 physicians and 427 nurses, was surveyed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory, (...) Social Support Survey, and General Health Questionnaire as measures of burnout, social support, and general health, respectively. Social support was found to mediate the negative effects of burnout on health regardless of gender. Differences across the three dimensions of burnout and health are further discussed, along with their implications for designing effective burnout interventions for health care professionals in Ecuador. BackgroundThe Patient Health Questionnaire-9 is the most well-known self-report measure to screen for depressive symptomatology, although discerning which is the factor structure that represents the best fit remains a challenge.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to analyze the psychometric properties and factorial structure of the Spanish version of the PHQ-9 in a large sample of Ecuadorian college students.MethodsA total of 5,394 students from three Ecuadorian universities were surveyed using a computerized questionnaire within a 4-week assessment period. The PHQ-9 was tested (...) for factorial structure, reliability, and correlations with other mental health-related measures.ResultsThe hierarchical model that included a general factor and three nested factors had a better fit, and such a hierarchical structure remained invariant across sex and age. Total omega value was 0.90 for the total scale and hierarchical omega values were 0.68 for the general factor, as well as 0.34, 0.38, and 0.44 for the respective nested factors. Moreover, PHQ-9 scores were significantly higher among women, although effect sizes of comparison of those sex differences were very small. Finally, the PHQ-9 scores correlated with multiple mental health indicators.DiscussionThe Spanish version of the PHQ-9 showed good psychometric properties among Ecuadorian college students. The hierarchical structure showed the best fit for the data, including not only a dominant general factor, but also the somatic, cognitive/affective and concentration/motor subcomponents. In conclusion, the PHQ-9 tool seems to represent an easy-to-implement screening questionnaire to design preventive programs for those Ecuadorian college students at risk of developing depressive disorders. How does personality influence the relationship between appraisals and emotions? Recent research suggests individual differences in appraisal structures: people may differ in an emotion's appraisal pattern. We explored individual differences in interest's appraisal structure, assessed as the within-person covariance of appraisals with interest. People viewed images of abstract visual art and provided ratings of interest and of interest's appraisals (novelty–complexity and coping potential) for each picture. A multilevel mixture model found two between-person classes that reflected distinct within-person appraisal styles. For (...) people in the larger class (68%), the novelty–complexity appraisal had a stronger effect on interest; for people in the smaller class (32%), the coping potential appraisal had a stronger effect. People in the larger class were significantly higher in appetitive traits related to novelty seeking (e.g., sensation seeking, openness to experience, and trait curiosity), suggesting that the appraisal classes have substantive meaning. We conclude by discussing the value of within-person mixture models for the study of personality and appraisal. (shrink)

Education and its need/potential to enable tomorrows, to invent promises that look to places of desire, spaces that take shape as heterotopias. The notion of utopia is strained at root because defined as a no-where. At school, it is bound to the potential to create new possibilities and alternatives for life in the here and now. Employing a time-lagged sample of 371 North American individuals working full time in a wide range of industries, occupations, and levels, we contribute to research on employee outcomes of corporate social responsibility attributions as substantive or symbolic. Utilizing a mediated moderation model, our study extends previous findings by explaining how and why CSR attributions are related with work-related attitudes and subsequent individual performance. In support of our hypotheses, our findings indicate that the relationships between CSR attributions and individual performance are (...) mediated through person–organization fit and work-related attitudes. Additionally, when CSR is perceived as important, substantive CSR is positively related to, and symbolic CSR is negatively related to, perception of fit with the organization. These findings contribute toward our understanding of the complex effect CSR has on employees’ work outcomes. Practical implications and future research directions are discussed. (shrink)

_Reconfigures classic aesthetic concepts in relation to the novelty introduced by virtual bodies._.

In this paper we develop the notion of formal precover in a topos by defining a relation between elements and sets in a local set theory. We show that such relations are equivalent to modalities and to universal closure operators. Finally we prove that these relations are well characterized by a convenient restriction to a particular set.

Research involving transgender and gender diverse people (TGD) increased in the last years, mostly concerning healthcare associated to this population. Few studies dedicated their analysis to the impact of parental support on transgender people, even though this is an important aspect in creating a safe environment on which these individuals can build their identity. In addition, the link between family support, TGD identity and homelessness is not completely established. Thus, due to the specificities of the family context of TGD individuals, (...) the aim of this study is to investigate the association between family support and TGD in different moments of the process of gender affirmation. In addition, this study also aims to explore the relationship between a lack of social support and low self-esteem, home abandonment, and dwelling in the street. The survey was designed based on the TransPULSE project and was made available in electronic format. The sample was constituted of 423 TGD residents in two Brazilian states. A Structural Equation Model analysis suggested that the impact of gender affirmation status on homelessness was mediated by parental support, through self-esteem, and the need to move from home. The association between the status of the gender affirmation procedures, family support and self-esteem was significant and indicated that the further TGD individuals advanced in gender affirmation, the more self-esteem and family support they would have. The association between family support and self-esteem indicated that family support was associated with higher self-esteem. Low family support was associated with the willingness to move from home due to one’s TGD status and there was also a significant correlation between low self-esteem and the willingness to move from home due to one’s TGD status. Finally, homelessness was associated with the willingness to move with a large effect size. Limitations include the sample that was constituted by individuals with Internet access and who had more contact with TGD communities. The findings indicate directions for interventions involving TGD people and their families, considering the parental relationship as a critical variable to improve TGD quality of life in the process of gender affirmation. There have been major developments in the understanding of children’s nonhuman concepts, particularly God concepts, within the past two decades, with a body of cross-cultural studies accumulating. Relatively less research has studied those of non-Christian faiths or children’s concepts of popular occult characters. This paper describes two studies, one in Spain and one in England, examining 5- to 10-year-olds’ human and nonhuman agent beliefs. Both settings were secular, but the latter comprised a Muslim majority. Children were given a false-belief task (...) in which they were asked to infer about three humans, three animals and three supernatural beings. Similar false beliefs about humans, with subtle differences in inferences about animals and supernatural beings, were found between the two locations. In London different patterns for God between participants with a family religion, in particular Muslims, and non-affiliates, were identified as well as an association between religious beliefs and practice and inferences about God. Findings are discussed in the light of theory and research on the role of sociocultural inputs in children’s theory of mind development and understanding of agency. (shrink)

8 March, now known as International Women’s Day, is a day for feminist claims where demonstrations are organized in over 150 countries, with the participation of millions of women all around the world. These demonstrations can be viewed as collective rituals and thus focus attention on the processes that facilitate different psychosocial effects. This work aims to explore the mechanisms involved in participation in the demonstrations of 8 March 2020, collective and ritualized feminist actions, and their correlates associated with personal (...) well-being and collective well-being, collective efficacy and collective growth, and behavioral intention to support the fight for women’s rights. To this end, a cross-cultural study was conducted with the participation of 2,854 people from countries in Latin America and Europe, with a retrospective correlational cross-sectional design and a convenience sample. Participants were divided between demonstration participants and non-demonstrators or followers who monitored participants through the media and social networks. Compared with non-demonstrators and with males, female and non-binary gender respondents had greater scores in mechanisms and criterion variables. Further random-effects model meta-analyses revealed that the perceived emotional synchrony was consistently associated with more proximal mechanisms, as well as with criterion variables. Finally, sequential moderation analyses showed that proposed mechanisms successfully mediated the effects of participation on every criterion variable. These results indicate that participation in 8M marches and demonstrations can be analyzed through the literature on collective rituals. As such, collective participation implies positive outcomes both individually and collectively, which are further reinforced through key psychological mechanisms, in line with a Durkheimian approach to collective rituals. En tant que tabou de notre société, la pratique de l’inceste parait être une constante humaine indépendante de toute dimension historique. Il est vrai, en effet, comme Fabienne Giuliani le précise en ouverture de son livre, que ce phénomène « demeure un crime aux frontières de notre conscience » (p. 11) : il suscite horreur, silence, dégoût, phobie dans notre imaginaire. De surcroît, depuis la théorie de Lévi-Strauss bien connue, son interdiction représenterait le fondement de toute société....

Nous allons analyser le passage de la conception freudienne de l'inconscient à celle de Lacan, mise en place à partir de son dernier enseignement. Dans celle-ci, l'interprétation n'est plus la seule clé de lecture de l'inconscient. Nous allons montrer l'articulation des deux inconscients avec la notion de «temps», et en quoi, ces deux différentes conceptions déterminent la direction de la cure. Dans la première, l'inconscient est plutôt envisagé à partir du temps passé, alors que dans la deuxième à partir du (...) futur: la contingence devient ainsi l'élément fondamental pour penser l'inconscient. La psychanalyse se montre alors comme une discipline qui ne vise pas seulement à déceler les mécanismes déterminés de l'inconscient, mais aussi comme pratique capable d'accueillir l'inattendu et de l'exploiter dans la cure. Vamos a analizar el pasaje de la concepción freudiana del inconsciente a la de Lacan, concebida a partir de su última enseñanza. En esta, la interpretación no es más la sola clave de lectura del inconsciente. Mostraremos la articulación de ambos inconscientes con la noción de "tiempo", y cómo estas dos diferentes concepciones determinan la dirección de la cura. En la primera, el inconsciente es sobre todo contemplado a partir del tiempo pasado, mientras que en la segunda a partir del futuro: la contingencia se hace así el elemento fundamental para pensar en el inconsciente. El psicoanálisis se muestra entonces como una disciplina que no pretende solamente descubrir los mecanismos determinados del inconsciente, sino también como práctica capaz de acoger lo inesperado y explotarlo en la cura. Silvia Berti has offered evidence it was written by Jan Vroesen. Various discussions in the early eighteenth century consider many possi ble authors from the Renaissance onwards to whom the work (...) might be attributed. The Trois imposteurs has attracted quite a bit of recent attention as one of the most significant irreligious clandestine writings available in the Enlightenment, which is most important for understanding the develop ment of religious scepticism, radical deism, and even atheism in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Scholars for the last couple of decades have been trying to assess when the work was actually written or compiled and by whom. In view of the widespread distribution of manu scripts of the work all over Europe, they have also been seeking to find out who was influenced by the work, and what it represented for its time. Humility was perceived in the Christian Middle Ages as a fundamental moral and intellectual quality, opening the way for access to the divine. How this access occurred, and for what kind of people, was dependent on different theological and philosophical presuppositions. The role of humility was thus moulded according to different anthropological and noetical models. By the end of the 13th century, the «question de l’humilité», as Alain de Libera posed it, had also become a locus for confrontation and definition (...) between different intellectual identities. This study focuses on the role that the secular master Henry of Ghent assigned to humility for approaching and transmitting divine truth, both from the perspective of the single individual and of the Christian community. Some topical categories describing essential features of humility – low/high, the ladder, interior/exterior, empty/full – aid in the analysis of some passages from the works of this theologian. No cure yet exists for devastating Alzheimer's disease (AD), despite many years and humongous efforts to find efficacious pharmacological treatments. So far, neither designing drugs to disaggregate amyloid plaques nor tackling solely inflammation turned out to be decisive. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and, in particular, extracellular vesicles (EVs) originating from them could be proposed as an alternative, strategic approach to attack the pathology. Indeed, MSC‐EVs—owing to their ability to deliver lipids/proteins/enzymes/microRNAs endowed with anti‐inflammatory, amyloid‐β degrading, and neurotrophic activities—may be exploited (...) as therapeutic tools to restore synaptic function, prevent neuronal death, and slow down memory impairment in AD. Herein the results presented in the most recently published studies on this topic are critically evaluated, providing a strong rationale for possible employment of MSC‐EVs in AD. (shrink)

Il suo allievo Maurizio Ferraris critica la visone del suo maestro col tentativo di instaurare un nuovo realismo, volendo riportare in auge un concetto di verità, che escluda da esso tutte le verità di tipo epistemologico e religiose. L’analisi e lo studio dell’attacco al postmoderno di Ferraris (...) che qui viene fatto mostra che sia nel pensiero del primo autore, con la difesa delle verità “soggettive”, sia nel secondo, che difende le verità “oggettive”, il concetto di verità resta slegato dalla morale, e che non avendo contenuti epistemologici su cui fondarsi non giunge all’effettivo ritorno di una nozione “forte” di verità. The scientific literature highlights the risk of the appearance of internalizing and externalizing symptoms, together with difficulties in the academic area, linked to diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This is normally assessed by teachers and primary caregivers, disregarding the self-perception of the adolescents themselves, which limits detection of this disorder at an evolutionary stage. Our aim was to analyze the psychometric properties of a self-report for ADHD in adolescence and its relationship with psychopathology and academic performance. This study assessed (...) an incidental sample of 267 students from secondary schools in the Region of Murcia, Spain, using the EDAH questionnaire adapted for self-report, in order to analyze its psychometric properties in assessing ADHD. The Youth Self-Report and the Brief Self-Control Scale were also used to determine their association with psychopathological, self-control and academic performance variables. An ADHD prevalence of between 3.7 and 13.1% was observed depending on the established cut-off point. The adapted EDAH showed adequate reliability indices and explained a high variance percentage. Adolescents with anxiety/depression difficulties, dissocial behavior, aggressiveness, and poor performance in mathematics showed a higher amount of ADHD symptoms. Moreover, self-control, dissocial behavior, age, and performance in Social Sciences acted as predictors of the disorder. The good psychometric properties of this questionnaire and its adequate correspondence with other variables of interest suggest it is an appropriate self-report instrument to assess ADHD in adolescence. The Abstract Conceptual Feature (ACF) framework predicts that word meaning is represented within a high‐dimensional semantic space bounded by weighted contributions of perceptual, affective, and encyclopedic information. The ACF, like latent semantic analysis, is amenable to distance metrics between any two words. We applied predictions of the ACF framework to abstract words using eyetracking via an adaptation of the classical “visual word paradigm” (VWP). Healthy adults (n = 20) selected the lexical item most related to a probe word in a (...) 4‐item written word array comprising the target and three distractors. The relation between the probe and each of the four words was determined using the semantic distance metrics derived from ACF ratings. Eye movement data indicated that the word that was most semantically related to the probe received more and longer fixations relative to distractors. Importantly, in sets where participants did not provide an overt behavioral response, the fixation rates were nonetheless significantly higher for targets than distractors, closely resembling trials where an expected response was given. Furthermore, ACF ratings which are based on individual words predicted eye fixation metrics of probe‐target similarity at least as well as latent semantic analysis ratings which are based on word co‐occurrence. The results provide further validation of Euclidean distance metrics derived from ACF ratings as a measure of one facet of the semantic relatedness of abstract words and suggest that they represent a reasonable approximation of the organization of abstract conceptual space. The data are also compatible with the broad notion that multiple sources of information (not restricted to sensorimotor and emotion information) shape the organization of abstract concepts. While the adapted “VWP” is potentially a more metacognitive task than the classical visual world paradigm, we argue that it offers potential utility for studying abstract word comprehension. En mettant en exergue une série de lieux topiques s'inspirant d'un humanisme et d'un immanentisme radicaux, et présents tant dans ce courant philosophique mal connu en France qu'était l'historicisme que dans la démarche cognitive de l' anthropologie, le présent travail (...) vise à restituer à l'historicisme la paternité d'une série de réflexions au cœur de l'humanisme moderne. A number of the epistemological issues addressed within the context of the « Debate on historicism » are today the object of theoretical questions that anthropologists ask themselves. This paper brings out a series of topics inspired by a radical humanism and immanentism, and which are present both in historicism — a philosophical current not widely known in France — and in the cognitive procedures of anthropology. In so doing, it aims at returning to historicism the paternity of a series of reflexions which are at the core of modern humanism. (shrink)

Expected Utility Theory (EUT) has anomalies when interpreted descriptively and tested empirically. Experiments show that the way in which options are formulated is, in most cases, relevant for decision-making. This kind of anomaly is directly related, however, not with a proper axiom of EUT but rather with the logical principle of extensionality and its decision theoretic version: the principle of invariance. This paper focuses on the phenomenon of framing effects (FE) and the associated failures of invariance. FE arise when different (...) descriptions of the same object lead to different preferences, beliefs, or choices. A formal reconstruction of the Gain–Loss (G-L) frame is proposed, expanding the domain of standard decision theory to incorporate not only prospects but also descriptions of prospects. The system is extended by adding non-monotonic logical resources so as to account for the ceteris paribus character of FE. Finally, the same method is applied to sketching a formal representation for an anomalous case that involves subjective probabilities. The logical method is a general one that can be applied to most cases of FE. The philosophical consequences of the strategy pursued are also discussed. (shrink)
